4. Look at the metals used to mount the stone, if there are any. Real diamonds are set in superior metals, such as 14 karat gold, 18 karat gold, platinum and silver. These metals are generally marked with symbols such as 14k, 18k, PT or 950. A cubic zirconium will probably be set in a gold- or silver-plated jewelry.

5. Look at the stone from the side. A real diamond will sparkle from this angle. A cubic zirconium when looked at from the side will appear dull and will have no sparkle.
